Sketch A Day, Day 286

Friday, April 6th, 2012

Technically he is tied with all the other players who have 1.000 OBP. Unfortunately, Eddie was a mean drunk and things did not end well for him.

Sketch A Day, Day 281

Sunday, April 1st, 2012

The unfortunate part about posting these once-a-day and months after they were drawn, is that there ends up being an unintended relationship between the post and the day it is posted. Rest assured there is no connection between this drawing and April Fools Day. That said, you have something on your shirt.

Sketch A Day, Day 240

It was reported that he repeatedly called out the name “Reynolds” before he died. His circumstances the days before he died and the cause remain a mystery. Read more about  the whole sordid affair right here:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Edgar_Allan_Poe

Remember the Sketch from Day 94? No? Well, that’s OK–here’s the final Munny project anyways.

Wednesday, January 18th, 2012

I received this do-it-yourself mini Munny last year.

The mystery accessory was a tiny fedora hat, so I figured I had some options with what Munny character I was going to create:  Rorschach, Clark Kent, Kolchak the Night Stalker, The Question. Turns out I didn’t go with any of those guys and instead I created a Munny of ol’ Blue Eyes:

I picture him being the 1960’s Sinatra, who is just starting to get a bit weathered.

The Process:

The first step was to take the Munny apart and coat it in white gesso.

I then used Liquitex acrylic paint to get the skin tone right.

Then I roughed out the shapes of the suit and tie and his face and hair with a mechanical pencil.

I finished everything with Prismacolor markers. You can still see some of the pencil marks on his face, but I think that adds to his weathered look. If I had to do it again, I might skip the paint and try to do everything with the Prismacolor markers. Although it did make me feel a bit better knowing I could just re-gesso it if I made a huge mistake.  I think it turned out great though and it was fun to do. Highly recommended.

Sketch A Day, Day 204

Saturday, December 24th, 2011

OK, so I watched a documentary on Windsor McCay and then drew a mess of  these sketches. In the documentary, you got to see Winsor’s animations–some of the very first animations ever. They were amazing, and not just because he helped innovate an entire visual medium. The movement he achieved was astounding. One in particular was the story of the sinking of the Lusitania–see it here. My sketch is really just a line drawing of the moving bits of one frame–or 1/24th of a second. Winsor hand-drew every single frame of the movie, except for the text cards. There’s a constantly moving foreground, explosions, people, flotsam and jetsam, all of which is precisely rendered on 25,000 separate pieces of paper. Astounding.

Sketch A Day, Day 62

Sunday, August 7th, 2011

The day I was looking for a topic for a sketch, I found out it was Betty Ford’s birthday on April 8th. I decided to do the sketch of her because (1) she had on this totally 70’s crazy orange dress, and (2)  I wanted to learn a little more about her. A few months after her birthday this year, she passed away. Now, I claim no expertise on Mrs. Ford’s life, but in my (very minimal) research that day I did learn that she was a pretty brave woman–Happy B-Day, Betty.

Harvey Pekar. RIP.

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

Harvey Pekar passed away this week.   If you’ve never read his books, you should.  Go buy some American Splendor here.   I also recommend Our Cancer Year, written with his wife, Joyce, about his successful fight against lymphoma.  And of course watch the amazing movie, American Splendor.
