Sketch A Day, Day 279

Friday, March 30th, 2012

Do yourself a favor and read the Baroque Cycle by Neal Stephenson. Newton and Leibniz both play major roles in the story. If you are a fan of fictional history, real history, science, economics, literature,  revolutions and quixotic love stories, then these three tomes are right up your alley.  A fantastic trilogy.

Sketch A Day, Day 271

Saturday, March 24th, 2012

I drew a few sketches of the cast of ” Bored to Death”–a show I really enjoy. Just as with everything I like (see also Carnivale, Deadwood, Lucky Louis and Jimmy Darmody) HBO cancelled it just a few short weeks later. I watched from day-one because I am a huge fan of Jonathon Ames’ short story that it’s based on. It is an expertly crafted noir thriller. So I was really surprised with the comedic tone of the show. Especially since Ames wrote all of the shows as well. Turned out it was a good surprised and I would have liked to see where he would have taken us in season 3.

Sketch A Day, Day 269

Go listen to Comedy Bang Bang. The bottom half of the picture has got nothing to do with anything other than the fact that I love that moment when a group of animals all notice something at the same time.

The dog has snowskates, which is why there’s four of them. It’s an extreme, dog. Very extreme.

I sold this short when I drew it–this could be a billion dollar idea. I didn’t know how lucrative celebrity colognes and perfumes are.

Sketch A Day, Day 265

I have not read the books or seen the movies, but was talking about it with someone when I blanked on the title. I knew it was a “D” word. I also imagine this girl  has an eNORMous torso to fit a good sized Dalek on there.

I drew too close to the binding. That made the right edge difficult to image because of the angle on the book binding kept it in shadows. The scanning process has been one of the most frustrating on this side project of mine. The scanner is just an old HP1300 and I have a huge stack of books and boxes to flatten the book out and get a better scan, but it’s not perfect. So I do have to spend time in Photoshop cleaning it up. It’s a bit of a time-suck, but totally worth it to bring these masterpieces to the world. You’re welcome, world.

The other Fred Dekker movie that I mentioned in the Monster Squad post. Fred wrote and directed this classic homage to B-movies. Grindhouse before “Grindhouse.”
