Sketch A Day, Day 246

Tuesday, February 28th, 2012

This one is no where near as bad as Super Fuzz, but it is not as great as I remembered. You can tell it had its genesis as a Goonies knock off with the Universal Monsters instead of the Fratellis and One-Eyed Willie. It is better than just a knock off, but not by much. Written by Shane Black together with the director, Fred Dekker, it is a quintessential 80’s movie. It even had Mary Ellen Trainor. The story is entertaining enough and the movie provided a few memorable lines (alluded to above), but watching it now it is just sort of crude and uneven. I hear it is being remade again, and so I guess I hope they get it right this time.

Sketch A Day, Day 245

Tuesday, February 28th, 2012

This movie along with a series of others were shown non-stop on pay cable when I was a kid and so I watched them all over and over again. I never realized how terrible some of them really were until Netflix allowed me to revisit them.  This one was especially painful. Now that I’ve let go of it as a good movie, I can appreciate how awful it really is. It is the perfect Bad Movie, movie. Watch Terence Hill as policeman Dave Speed (ugh) get super-powers from a nuclear explosion (huh?) and then be the worst person ever. What super powers in particular does he get, you ask? All of them–whatever the writers might need for a scene. He immediately starts abusing these powers and everyone else, which would have been interesting but the filmmakers don’t think he is a jerk. They seem to think he is a great, great guy. At one point I think I remember him making an entire stadium of people disappear so he could catch a bad guy who was trying to get away in the crowd. WHERE DID THEY GO? He never brings them back and they never even try to explain it. But, he gets the bad guy and triumphant music plays (probably). He is awful. Watch it with friends and wonder at its terribleness.

It was reported that he repeatedly called out the name “Reynolds” before he died. His circumstances the days before he died and the cause remain a mystery. Read more about  the whole sordid affair right here:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Edgar_Allan_Poe

Other Sketches part 4 – The Riddle of Life

Thursday, February 2nd, 2012

I LOVE this story. The playfulness of the friendly competition between Max Delbruck and George Wells Beadle, who were both striving to understand how DNA works. I also love that this obscure story inspired Joe Davis to encode it within the genetic code of a strand of e. coli.  You can read more about all of it here:  http://90.146.8.18/en/archives/festival_archive/festival_catalogs/festival_artikel.asp?iProjectID=8275
