Sketch A Day, Day 208

A very quick Little Nemo sketch.  I guess fell down a bit of a Winsor McCay-hole this week. Nemo is probably the property I was most familiar with. I remember the licensed Nintendo video game from the early 90’s.  And just recently, when the Blockbuster nearest us went out of business, I picked up a DVD of the 1989 anime film, Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland. It is visually lovely, but totally nuts otherwise. The kid was insufferable and the story made no sense. And it was written by, among a few others, Ray Bradbury and Chris Columbus. Anyways, none of these other projects captured the charm and bizarre imagination on display in McCay’s original strips. You should also check out another of McCay’s  strips, Dream of the Rarebit Fiend. Very influential, that McCay feller.

Sketch A Day, Day 207

This is that guy from barbershop quartets who can’t remember the words to songs. 150 points to anyone who can guess the name of the song he’s trying to sing.

I dare say that is quite a lot of points. I certainly hope no one collects.

Again with the Winsor McCay. This is from a picture of the man himself along with his beloved creation, Gertie the Dinosaur. See Gertie in action:

Sketch A Day, Day 205

Sunday, December 25th, 2011

I think I was wondering what ole Chuck Brown would look like a bit older. In real life, he’d be around 60 or so today. It’s difficult to tell how old he is here since he’s got that mustache, but at least he’s still got his hair. That one hair.

Sketch A Day, Day 204

Saturday, December 24th, 2011

OK, so I watched a documentary on Windsor McCay and then drew a mess of  these sketches. In the documentary, you got to see Winsor’s animations–some of the very first animations ever. They were amazing, and not just because he helped innovate an entire visual medium. The movement he achieved was astounding. One in particular was the story of the sinking of the Lusitania–see it here. My sketch is really just a line drawing of the moving bits of one frame–or 1/24th of a second. Winsor hand-drew every single frame of the movie, except for the text cards. There’s a constantly moving foreground, explosions, people, flotsam and jetsam, all of which is precisely rendered on 25,000 separate pieces of paper. Astounding.

The Sketchbook Project 2011

Thursday, December 22nd, 2011

The digital image of the sketchbook I completed for The Sketchbook Project 2011 is available for public viewing. I had a lovely time doing the project, and I think some of the sketches came out really great. Unfortunately, I drew most everything in landscape and they scanned it in letter-format, if that makes sense. The long and short of it is that everything reads wrong. But, luckily all you need do to enjoy the sketchbook as the artist intended is turn your monitor on its side–problem solved. The theme was “Secret Codes.” See if you can’t decipher some of my hidden messages. Test your mettle against a real genius of cryptography! Or, like I said, you can check out my sketchbook: http://www.arthousecoop.com/library/3648

Please to enjoy!

Sketch A Day, Day 194

Wednesday, December 14th, 2011

Crikey, do I hate this one. I spend around 30 minutes on each, sometimes less. And looking back through them, quite a few are god-awful bad. Static or confusing composition, lazy design, uninspired subject, migraine-inducing anatomy, and this one has all that and is also super boring. It’s terrible. But, the experiment is to do a sketch every single day using the tools I chose last year and to publish all of them–good, bad or the make-your-eyes-commit-suicide-by-hanging-themselves-by-their-own-optic-nerve-bad ones–they all end up here for you to see and judge. I usually refrain from telling people what to think of them. It’s not complicated, and people can make up their own minds. But this one is so bad I felt I needed to acknowledge it. Anyways, I can honestly say that there are better ones to come. There’ll be other bad ones too, but I think none will be quite this bad. That’s my quality guarantee to you, faithful fans.

Yet another Thrilling Adventure Hour show, can you guess what I was listening to the week I drew these. “Sparks Nevada, Marshal on Mars” is a great a western. Sparks has got robot fists and a Martian Deputy named Croach the Tracker, who is as you may have guessed, is really good at tracking.  Treat your earholes right:  http://www.nerdist.com/2011/10/thrilling-adventure-hour-43-sparks-nevada-marshal-on-mars-in-%E2%80%9Ccompaneros%E2%80%9D/

Another Thrilling Adventure Hour Show:  “Beyond Belief” stars Paul F. Tompkins and Paget Brewster as a psychically-gifted, functioning-alcoholic well-to-do married couple, Frank and Sadie Doyle. It’s like the Thin Man, but with even more drinking and also ghosts, vampires and African gods.  Take a listen:  http://www.nerdist.com/2011/10/thrilling-adventure-hour-now-on-nerdist-episode-42-beyond-belief-%E2%80%9Cwhite-hunter-drunk-heart%E2%80%9D-2/

Sketch A Day, Day 188

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

Captain Laserbeam is one of a series of serialized internet audio shows that are homages to early radio adventure serials. They are all written by Ben Acker and Ben Blacker (no relation) and performed in front of a live audience in L.A. by amazingly talented actors like John DiMaggio, Marc Evan Jackson, James Urbaniak, Paul F. Tompkins, Paget Brewster, Craig Cackowski, Andy Daly, Hal Lublin, Patton Oswalt, Danny Pudi, and Busy Phillips. Each show is wonderful in its own weird way. I am very happy they exist. So thanks to Mssrs Acker and Blacker and the actors and musicians that put the show together. Click here to listen to the shows: http://www.nerdist.com/podcast/thrilling-adventure-hour/

Do yourself a favor and at least listen to the Captain Laserbeam Theme
