Spider King may be a mighty king, but he is still a little fish when Spider Queen shows up.

Sketch A Day, Day 83

Saturday, August 27th, 2011

I found myself with an increasing number of Altoids tins and nothing to do with them. They’re incredibly sturdy and pocket-sized, so I thought there must be something I can do with them. Then I came upon a great Instructables project by JP Martineau. His idea was to use Sculpey clay and tube watercolors to create a travel watercolor kit. It worked like a charm. Here’s the link to the instructions:  http://www.instructables.com/id/Altoids-Tin-Pocket-Sized-Watercolor-Box/.

Here’s what I ended up with. I’ve actually made two more, but gave them away as gifts.

Maybe I’m addicted to the smell of Sculpey Clay or something, but I love making these things.  I will eventually have a problem finding places to store all of the finished products–email me and let me know if you’d like one.  *UPDATE! – Thanks to those who wrote in, I am all out of the tins.

I drew the Frog-Man and then, for whatever reason, I added Daniel Johnston‘s catch-phrase. If you haven’t already, do yourself a favor and watch The Devil and Daniel Johnston. A really great documentary.

Yeah. Photoshopping Mr. Buscemi’s eyes onto pictures of young women is a real thing. And it has scarred me.

*UPDATE – I did not carve the Paul F. Pumpkins this year. Definitely next year. . .

I used Sacco and Vanzetti’s actual mugshots as reference. It’s odd how calm they look. Also, I found it strange that they kept their hats on.

Terrible lettering on a clunky rhyme scheme on this one. But something about ole’ Connie makes me smile.

Sketch A Day, Day 66

Thursday, August 11th, 2011

Yuri was an interesting fellow–seemingly fearless, but not foolish, he did what no other man had ever done up until that point. Robert Krulwich, of Radio Lab wrote this amazing piece that paints a portrait of Gregarian after he had become a national hero for his space mission, during a later mission. He tried to be a good friend to a fellow cosmonaut who was also caught up in the race to the stars. It did not end well and Gregarian, by this account, was never the same. Yuri passed away in a plane crash in 1968.

Good Ole’ Mr. Limpet. It’s a classic. *UPDATE – I heard Zach Galifinakis was considered for the Don Knott part in the current remake that may or may not be made. I am an insider.

Sketch A Day, Day 62

Sunday, August 7th, 2011

The day I was looking for a topic for a sketch, I found out it was Betty Ford’s birthday on April 8th. I decided to do the sketch of her because (1) she had on this totally 70’s crazy orange dress, and (2)  I wanted to learn a little more about her. A few months after her birthday this year, she passed away. Now, I claim no expertise on Mrs. Ford’s life, but in my (very minimal) research that day I did learn that she was a pretty brave woman–Happy B-Day, Betty.

“Wah-wah” –that is the internationally recognized sound of the trombone that comes after corny jokes. And folks, they don’t come much cornier than this. You try and draw something at least somewhat interesting every day and you very quickly realize they’re not all gems.
