Sketch A Day, Day 52

Thursday, July 28th, 2011

The ape, the myth, the legend. . .Dr. Zaius. Before I saw the movie, what I knew about the original Planet of Apes came almost entirely from the amazing Simpsons’ song parody (couldn’t find a full clip). I now understand the affection and devotion of those Simpsons writers for this story and, in particular, the character of Dr. Zaius.

Sketch A Day, Day 51

Wednesday, July 27th, 2011

The first of two sketches inspired by the original Planet of the Apes with Chuck Heston.  I didn’t know it was co-written by Rod Sterling, but his sensibilities really came through. It was amazing! Despite the rubber ape faces not moving at all, some clunky futuristic/post-modern/pre-historic design choices, and Heston’s sometimes grating choice to scream every single one of his lines, it was truly an amazing movie.

Sketch A Day, Day 50

I understand Bobby “The Brain” Heenan is ill. I loved watching him perform when I was a kid. I hope he feels better soon.

A simply stunning piece, it is titled “Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man.”

Time to get classy with a bear with a top-hat on a unicycle. No monocle though. Sorry.

Sketch A Day, Day 43

Tuesday, July 19th, 2011

Another treat from Thailand. This one served as inspiration for a painting I completed a while back

It’s acrylic on wood. Haven’t used the stuff since high school. It’s tough to be precise with it, but I like the vibrancy of the product. Although that vibrant color doesn’t really translate in my terribly dull, out-of-focus picture. Ah, well.

Sketch A Day, Day 42

Monday, July 18th, 2011

This guy is based on some mural paintings I saw at a palace in Thailand. It’s an interesting creature and I have no idea what the context is for the murals–who they are supposed to represent.

Here’s some of pictures of the inspiration:

Please to enjoy!

Sketch A Day, Day 41

Sunday, July 17th, 2011

I feel like this guy sometimes when I get a new gadget.

Oh, and I’m back to post more of these. Sorry about the unexplained absence. Just got terribly busy. I never stopped drawing the Sketch-A-Days, but scanning and doing the Photoshop work to get them on the website became too much and I got waaaaay behind. In any event, I hope you enjoy them. They will be regularly posted for a long time to come.
